The Proverbs 31 Woman in 2018
Location: Lisbon, Portugal
Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Let me share one of my favourite Biblical passages below (with a few side notes of mine of course). P.S. I don’t know why women feel intimidated by the Proverbs 31 woman. I think she is cool, probably busy, but cool never the less. I think me and her could have possibly been bff’s – gotta love a woman who can pull off some head-to-toe purple! So yeah, don’t feel bad because she was a super woman, hard worker – secret…. she had many servant girls. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone I told you…. Ok here we go. The passage below can be found in the Bible. Proverbs 31:10-31
10 A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies. mmmh, Preach!
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value. Good on you girl!
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life. mhhh mhh... I concur
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands. I have tried but it’s pretty hard to source some good old wool and flax around this joint Lord.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar. hmmm, I am guessing internet and online grocery shopping counts right?
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family… interesting… hmmm, did she ever have small children, and thus broken sleep?? Just wondering y’all. I couldn’t get up while it is still night.
and portions for her female servants…. oh, there it is! An army of helpers! That explains the lack of broken sleep. Ooooh, the good Lord knows I could use some help around here. Lots of help!
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. hmmm, I don’t think I can trust the rain around these lands + water restrictions… Lord they won’t even let us wash the cars sometimes…
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks. Yeah… I see you gurl! U better work those Michelle Obama triceps…
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night. I am just trying to save some oil. You know oil prices be going up everyday… and the bills! Let’s not even go there…
19 In her hand she holds the distaff… hmmm I need to get me some of dis’taff… whatever that means… (lol)
and grasps the spindle with her fingers. You better Work dis’taff girl! I wonder if her nails are done too… this woman seems to be on top of her game!
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy. Good Good.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet. And that is why we moved to the hottest part of Aus y’all! I couldn’t find me some scarlet anywhere…
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple. someone better tell me where I can find these… I guess there is hope though, the Pantone colour for 2018 is purple, Praise da Lort!
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes. hmmm… maybe I will wait until some insta-savvy merchant makes sashes trendy again and de-thrones those ugly dad sneakers that are currently trending right now, please!
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come. AMEN sister! I be laughing right there wit’u gal!
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue. uh huh! me and you girl, me and you both! lol
27 She watches over the affairs of her household… hmmm, did it say ‘watches over‘? Oh, my bad.. she did have servant girls. I’d love to watch over some affairs too Lord, but I got to do them ;( … on top of everything else. Just saying y’all… just sayin’…. The good Lord knows I could use some servant girls too, you know what’um saying. N.B. in 2018 it wouldn’t be politically correct to call them that. Anyway, I digress… let’s get back to the main LADY.
and does not eat the bread of idleness. I am guessing gluten-free is safer? Phew!
28 Her children arise and call her blessed; children, y’all better step up your game!
her husband also, and he praises her: husband you better step up your game!
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.” hmmm, you go girl! I won’t even try to compete with you. You go on and spin that wool wit’your distaff and dat staff…
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
And that my friend is how I think when I am reading Proverbs 31 😉 I don’t think it’s put in the Bible to make us feel bad – but as something inspirational; not to be interpreted literally. I mean who still spins wool, right? I think we just have to get the solid stuff out of it. This woman was a faithful wife, great mother, hard worker, she took care of all that God had blessed her with (yes she even took care of her servant girls). But most importantly, she was a God fearing woman. That verse is not placed at the end by mistake. That’s the main takeaway. If you are a God-fearing woman, the rest of the stuff mentioned above will just happen as second nature. You will perform at your best, for you will cherish all the resources God has entrusted you with and have the understanding they are to be used to bless others. You will honour your husband + love and parent your children well and set them on the right path for life. You will take care of yourself too for you will know your worth and understand your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. You will value the gift of time for that’s one of the most precious gifts God has given us.
P.S. God fearing doesn’t mean being scared of God, but revering Him so much because you understand that all He has done and continues to do for you comes from a place of LOVE. Sure, the Proverbs 31 woman sounds perfect, but you know what I like about her (besides the fact that she wasn’t scared to wear purple (a girl after my own heart)), is that she was a God fearing woman. And that, my friend, enabled her to be the best at her craft, i.e. the best at doing and being all she was meant to be. Instead of comparing yourself to her (and miserably falling short, oh yes you will), let’s try and be the best versions of ourselves, walk in our purpose, do and be all that God meant for us to be. And exactly how do I do that? I am glad you asked. You gotta walk with God, my lady. He is our manufacturer, our Maker, the Master behind the masterpiece that you are – and therefore the only true and safe place where you can find your true self. Simple.
Have a great Mother’s Day! Love you!
P.S. The notes in blue italics, will not be found in your Bible. Those are purely my very own musings…
And as for the people who don’t think my little Proverbs 31 side notes are funny, you know those extra saved Christians… y’all better tighten your sash and sit down… and read your Bible properly. It’s supposed to be a fun, life-giving book… not like you… mmmhhh
Have an amazing week, and thanks for reading all the way up to here. You totes rock, and I will be praying for you this week. Remember to pause and ask yourself this week; am I being my best self and offering the best I can to all I have been entrusted with?
