4 STEPS TO HEARING GOD’S VOICE CLEARLY
OK, steps to hearing God’s voice clearly… really? They exist? Yes ma’am. I know we’ve all had that “Was that You, Lord… or did I just make that up?” moment. Usually followed by a spiral of confusion, fleece-laying, tea leaf-reading (just kidding… I hope), or waiting for a random gush of wind to hit the left ankle. And while everyone loves to throw around spiritual one-liners like “you’ll just know when you know”, some of us are out here going, “No Brenda. Actually, I don’t know. That’s why I’m asking.”
But what if I told you that hearing from God doesn’t have to be complicated?
No clouds parting. No dramatic angelic visitations. No burning bush required.
Just a few quiet, intentional steps, (…with help, of course, from a Biblical guy named Habakkuk, and some good ol’ divine common sense).
That’s why we are deeply thankful for Mark Virkler, who (unlike many gifted people who hear God clearly but can’t explain it to save their life) actually broke it down into 4 practical, simple steps to hearing God’s voice clearly. Like a good university lecturer. Because, let’s be honest – some most of us really need a good “Step 1, 2,3 & 4” — especially when it comes to something as personal, weighty, and mysterious as hearing the Creator of the universe whisper to our hearts.
Thankfully, Mark didn’t leave us guessing. He took the verses in Habakkuk 2 and decoded them into a format even the sheep-iest of sheep can follow — no spiritual flexing required. It’s biblical, it’s practical, and it actually works.
Let’s dive in.
Here are the clear 4 Steps To Hearing God’s Voice clearly, sans the drama….
1. Stillness: Quiet Yourself So You Can Hear
Habakkuk 2:1 — “I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts…”
Translation: I’m going to get quiet and listen.
The first step is simple but oh-so-difficult in a world that thinks silence is suspicious.
Stillness doesn’t mean you need a monk robe or to book a 3-day retreat in the wilderness.
It just means pausing the hustle and giving God your full attention.
Turn off the podcast. Put your phone face-down. Tell your inner multitasker to take a seat.
Then… breathe.
Tip: If your brain starts running through your to-do list, just jot it down and keep coming back to Jesus. He’s not offended by your wandering mind. He’s just happy you showed up.
2. Vision: Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
Habakkuk said: “…I will look to see what He will say to me…”
Wait. See what He will say?
Yes. That’s biblical poetry at its best.
God often speaks through pictures in our minds. No, it’s not your imagination on steroids — it’s the Holy Spirit using your imagination to speak to your spirit. Jesus didn’t stop using visuals after parables. He’s still painting pictures today — we just need to pay attention.
Tip: Ask Holy Spirit to sanctify your imagination (yes, it’s a thing). Then picture Jesus and focus on Him. Sometimes, that one simple act opens the floodgates.
3. Spontaneity: Recognize God’s Voice Through Flowing Thoughts
Here’s where it gets fun: God’s voice often sounds like spontaneous thoughts that light up your spirit.
Not loud. Not bossy.
Not “Morgan Freeman narrating Scripture” vibes.
More like gentle nudges, fresh ideas, or a phrase that bubbles up out of nowhere.
Habakkuk said, “He will say to me…” — and often, that’s how it begins.
No thunder. No lightning. Just a soft whisper inside that doesn’t sound like you… but feels more right than anything else.
Tip: God’s voice is loving, truthful, and always a lot more wiser than what you would have come up with. If it brings peace, conviction (not condemnation), or clarity — it might just be Him.
4. Journaling: Write It Down Without Editing
Habakkuk 2:2 — “Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets…”
Basically: God spoke, and I grabbed a pen.
This part is GOLD. Once you feel like you’re hearing something from the Lord — write it down.
Don’t analyze. Don’t second-guess. Just flow.
Journaling allows your brain to rest while your spirit pours out. It also gives you a track record to come back to when life gets loud (and you’re tempted to forget what God said during the quiet).
Tip: Use a separate journal just for God conversations. Date the entries. And yes, it’s okay to go back and highlight things later — just don’t interrupt the flow while you’re in it. so far so good. See, I told you these steps to hearing God’s voice are actually easy and practical.
So… What Now?
Start simple. Even if you feel unsure.
Because the only thing worse than “not knowing if it’s God” is never really giving Him the space to speak in the first place.
Make it part of your daily rhythm.
Quiet your heart. Fix your eyes. Let the thoughts flow. Write it all down.
Then trust that your Heavenly Father actually wants to talk to you… more than you want to hear.
Anyway, here’s Mark Virkler himself, talking about this very topic in more depth. P.S. He has a whole series about Hearing God’s Voice on his website, and He also has an amazing book you can find on Amazon, Audible and in all the other places where books are sold! (No, this is not a paid blog post, just one recommended by heaven). Oh, and He has tons and tons of free teaching material in our generation’s favourite university – YouTube.
Final Thoughts
Let’s stop acting like only spiritual superheroes get to hear God.
If you belong to Jesus, you already have His Spirit living inside you.
So grab your journal, get still, and stop waiting for a cloud to speak. Start implementing the 4 steps to hearing God’s voice given above, and you will start experiencing major changes, and clear direction in your life!
Sometimes, the still small voice is already whispering…
You just need to stop scrolling long enough to hear it.
If you’re keen to dive deeper into this topic, I’ve put together a playlist called HOW TO HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD FOR 2025 – and yes, it’s got more than one video, and they are from different people. My advice? Take it slow. One video a day is perfect.
