HOW TO HEAR GOD’S VOICE

Can You Actually Hear God’s Voice? (A Light but Serious Follow-Up)

So… remember that blog post I wrote nearly a year ago about how to hear God’s voice?

Yeah, that one. The “urgent word from above” one. I thought I was done. I hit publish and patted myself on the back like, “Whew! Assignment complete.”
But turns out, the assignment is not quite complete on hearing the Voice of God. Because here we are again.
Call it Part 2 if you like,  or maybe the director’s cut with bonus material. Either way, it’s back—and it’s still urgent.

Spoiler Alert: Not Everyone Hears God Clearly

Did you know that only a small percentage of church-going Christians can clearly hear the voice of God? Like, actually know it’s Him speaking. The rest of us are somewhere between:

  • “Was that You, Lord?”

  • “Wait… was that me?”

  • “Hang on… was that Satan?”

  • insert internal panic and wild over-analysis

Look, if you’re still not 100% sure whether that brilliant idea in your head was from Heaven or just your over-caffeinated brain—you’re not alone. But also… we’ve got work to do.

Because God Does Speak. Clearly. Personally. Regularly.

The goal isn’t to stay in this foggy zone of guessing. We want to get to that sweet spot where we hear God’s voice with clarity and confidence—on a regular Tuesday. No angel choir required.

I’m talking about the kind of relationship where you can ask God a very specific question, and get a very specific, very personal answer. Because newsflash: He’s a personal God. And He doesn’t copy-paste the same message to everyone.

A wise man once said:
“You are the best prophet of your own life.”
Yes, you. Not your pastor. Not your favourite YouTube preacher or TikTok Prophet. YOU.

And the ultimate goal? To grow to a point where your spiritual GPS isn’t forever connected to someone else’s signal. It’s YOU hearing the voice of God directly—and being led confidently.

Let’s Address the Classic Christian Objection

Now, I know someone’s already clutching their Bible whispering, “But the Bible is the only Word of God we need!”
Okay, deep breath.

Let’s be clear: The Bible is 100% the foundation. Your spiritual non-negotiable. It’s alive, eternal, and always points us to Jesus. BUT (and this is important)…
There will be moments in your life where you need a now-word. A divine download. A custom GPS route for your life. Because last time I checked, your Bible doesn’t include a verse that says:
“Take the graphic design job in Brisbane.”

And let’s not fall into the “putting out fleeces” trap, waiting for 17 confirmations, 3 dreams, and a dove to land on your windowsill. Because friend—that’s not faith. That’s delay with spiritual makeup on.

We are in an era that calls for bold, fast obedience. The kind of obedience that doesn’t wait to “feel peace” first. Because—real talk? Sometimes God will ask you to do something that feels the exact opposite of peaceful. It might make you want to run for the hills or hide under your duvet.
Still God.
Still your assignment.

So Who Helped Me Decode All This?

After months of praying, studying, and wrestling with this topic of  hearing God’s voice, I came across a humble but mighty teacher: Mark Virkler.
Now, full disclaimer: His YouTube videos aren’t flashy. They’re from the pre-HD era. Think VHS vibes. But the wisdom? Timeless.
This man has actually studied and taught how to hear God’s voice—and not in an abstract, floaty way, but in a practical, step-by-step way. And it works.

He has a book (on Amazon or Audible—shoutout to multitasking mums), and even a course with 10 teaching sessions on his website. No, I’m not getting paid to say this. I just appreciate when someone teaches something that actually makes sense.

Oh, and if you’re anything like me—juggling housework, kids, business, and wondering why “me time” is now folding laundry—you’ll love Audible. You can listen while driving, cleaning, or hiding in the bathroom with snacks.

I’ll be doing a post just for mums soon, because we all love a “kill two birds with one podcast” kind of deal.

Start Here:

I’ve linked one of his free YouTube videos below to get you started. It’s simple, solid, and straight to the point. And in the next post (which I promise will come before this decade ends), I’ll walk you through his practical steps for tuning into God’s voice clearly.

Let’s make 2025 the year we stop wondering if God is speaking, and start hearing Him loud and clear.

“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” Proverbs 25:2 KJV

Be blessed and…
