At the risk of sounding like a new age motivational guru, I thought today we’d talk about the power of now. Whether it’s a new project you have been putting off, getting your fitness on point, spending more time with loved ones, e.t.c there has never been a better time than NOW to do all that. I don’t know about you but I am one of those people who gets so fixated on numbers, sequences and just equations in order to make sense in my life. See my instagram feed for a mild case of what I am talking about. For example, if I plan to start something on the first of the month, and my plans get interrupted and the 2nd, the 3rd comes and I haven’t even started – chances are I will get discouraged and end up not doing it that month. This is because my intricate brain sees sequential patterns in most things, therefore I would rather wait for the next first of the month for things to ‘happen properly and make sense’. I know this may sound ridiculous but hey, if you are one of those people who can only have the TV volume on even numbers or worse – prime numbers (oh dear), you probably understand what I am raving on about. Anyway, needless to say, this sets me back a lot, and lately I feel like God has been reiterating the fact that IT IS OK to begin in the middle of the month, the year, or just simply to begin again. Regardless of whether you are a sequence or pattern-centric person (apologies to all the grammar gendarmes because that is possibly not even an adjective), I think we all suffer from this when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Yes, that exciting time when we make all those grandiose plans for the new year, plans which often fail before January is over. Usually, this failure to launch results in these plans being put off till the following year, just so we can start again. Properly. But then again, maybe it’s just me….
Well, sometimes we do have legit-sounding excuses, like the fear of leaping into the unknown, not having enough resources or just good old procrastination (a fancy way of saying laziness / failing to prioritise properly). Whatever the cause of your inaction, the best remedy is to just start. NOW. Trust me, this time next year you will be so glad you started this day. Realistically speaking, there is never a point when life ‘calms down’ enough to allow you to do stuff. You just have to make time for things that are meaningful to you (hence why you should never buy it when someone is too busy to hang out with you, because we all make time for things we really want to do). Coming back to my point; make time NOW for the things you really feel like you should do. You know, those ones tugging at your heart strings, no matter how much you try to ignore them. Even if it’s just tiny steps a day, it all amounts to something big after a month, a year. Don’t just be a compulsive planner (like me), but invest in your future by actually doing stuff and not waiting for the perfect time. The truth is, there is no chunk of free time just chilling in the future, waiting to come to you. Something unplanned will always crop up, guaranteed. Now is the only time you have at your disposal, and perhaps one of the most precious. And powerful. Pregnant with potential, and opportunity. The power of now.
Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well. Ecclesiastes 11:6
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. Proverbs 6:6-8 (Gotta love how the good book says it like it is 😉 ).
Anyway, you have a great day, and I hope you got something out of this. Do let me know in a year’s time if you succeeded in starting today, and the progress you made…. and I will share mine too 😉
